FIRST CHAPTER (by Hugo Oliveira)

I’m reading William Blake’s "An Island in The Moon" and imagining about this drifting planet rulled by one species known as human beings. Sooner or Later this world will shipwreck and of course some of its parts will survive and gather in a desert island – one island that I would like to name "New Earth" – so original! :^). Between the drift and the shipwreck I became responsible to choose five examples of human creativity so that the "new earthians" – more original stuff! - could learn anything about the "old planet", the planet that had bad-luck by taking the wrong way.

This looks like a small Noah’s Ark filled with objects. And if it’s true that human beings can think and do the most hideous things, It’s also true that they can create the most wonderfull ones - for other humans despite everything. William Blake came into my life because Ju "Popnoname" is a big fan of his writings - and because I’m a big fan of Popnoname music I wanted to know how one 18th century writer can influence the 21th century "Bit Generation" – one generation that celebrates life through music and images – peace iconography. It's not about techno, pop, electronics, experimental, rock n’roll, paintings, design, sculpture, video art, photography... it’s about that particular moment that leads a person to the creative click – the pure, non-contaminated click.

And that’s how "Matéria Prima" came into my world, survived the shipwreck and took this priviliged spot in the "Island". Matéria Prima is the place where I work most of the time – where I find my soundtracks, my readings, some inspiring visuals and beautifull people. The closest spot I can remember – to compare to – is "Cheers". But instead of liquor we have music – sometimes there’s wine to, for free! And it’s about people – MatÈria Prima is memory with a lot of names to recall, printed and spoken. So in this chapters I could not write about a few projects without mention the place where they "live" – one small country house is how I like to see it, with a unique landscape made of seductive tunes and shapes. Of course we need to sell – there’s rent to be paid. But I believe, I know, most of the people return not only for the music but also for the company, for the talk, sometimes for love and once per month for the wine. It started fiften years ago selling music only by postage. The shop oppened nine years ago in Oporto with extended interests – it also has a project wall curating photography. This year’s adventure is the portuguese capital – try to guess – and that means more people, more beautifull things.
Next on chapter two…
